Living Savior Lutheran Church- New Sanctuary Update #4- January, 2010
We have steel! On January 13, the contractor started the erection of the steel framing for our new sanctuary!

Start of Structural Steel Erection- January 13, 2010
Despite the holidays and the terrible weather, our general contractor has made some significant progress. Even with the frigid temperatures and snow, they were able to excavate for the foundation, and pour the concrete piers that support the steel columns.
Since the ground is so hard, they decided to get the steel set in place. They will then use the steel to support temporary weatherproofing, bring in some portable heat, and thaw the ground enough to install all the underslab piping & conduit. They will also build the masonry foundation. Finally, they will pour the concrete slab.
They have also completed the installation of most of the new underground water lines, sanitary sewer, storm sewer and storm water retention structure on our property. They are still waiting on open-cut & boring permits from VDOT to make the final connections in the road right-of-way.
Weather permitting, in the next month we should see significant progress on several fronts. According to the master schedule, in the next month, the following tasks should be underway:
- Complete the erection of the structural steel
- Install the new water line under Ox Road, and make other utility connections
- Start the masonry foundations and firewall, start light-gauge steel framing
- Install the under-slab plumbing and conduit rough-ins
- Start pouring the slab-on-grade.
The Stained Glass Committee is scheduled to make a field trip to visit Lynchburg Stained Glass Company on January 18, where they will tour the factory and meet with the stained glass artist.
Pray for good weather as we continue our project!

Yes, it’s true!! All the site easement and dedication issues have been resolved, and we have finally received our Fairfax County Building Permit!
We have given the general contractor, Jack Bays, Inc., the official notice to proceed. They have already started preliminary site work- bringing in the trailer and dumpster, fencing off the lay-down area where building materials will be stored, working with Miss Utility, marking out the building limits of construction and planning the soil and erosion control and marking the trees to be saved. The pre-construction meeting with the county inspectors has also already taken place. They have put down a gravel driveway, and started some preliminary digging.
You may have noticed the white tape marking a swath of land in front of the church, and running down along the parking lot. This marks out the path of the new water line that will be installed. Our existing water service feeds the church from a water main in Fourstairs Court, behind the church. The existing water pressure in that main was not adequate to feed the new building, so we are running a new main from the opposite side of Ox Road, tapping into a large existing main. The contractor will be using a relatively new technology to drill under Ox Road, avoiding the huge cost and disruption of cutting the road surface.
At the time of this report, the contractor is waiting on a VDOT permit that will allow them to bring heavy equipment on and off the site, and allow the start of utility work. (We could not apply for this permit until we received the building permit.) We expect to get this permit within the next two weeks.
Once we get the VDOT permit, the contractor will start clearing and grading the lot, and dig the foundation. They should have the foundation poured sometime in November. Not long after that, the structural steel erection will start. At the same time, work will start on the new water line. Right now, we are estimating that construction will take about 12 months, depending on weather, and other possible unforeseen conditions. We will get a more detailed schedule from the contractor once they actually start digging.
We plan to do monthly updates in the newsletter and on the website, and quick weekly updates in the bulletin.
I want to thank all of you for your prayers and your patience as we worked our way through the county. I know we have all been waiting a very long time to get this project started. Like you, I look forward to watching the new structure rise out of the ground in the very near future!

Living Savior Lutheran Church, located at 5500 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, held a ground breaking ceremony for a permanent sanctuary and narthex on Sunday, May 3, 2009.
The new sanctuary will seat nearly 300 people, effectively doubling the size of its present worship area. Additionally, the congregation will appreciate significantly more space for its core ministries and ancillary activities because the multi-purpose center currently used for worship will be available for new and increased service opportunities and community support
Living Savior has been an integral part of Northern Virginia since 1983. The congregation started small, initially meeting in homes and utilizing Fairview Elementary School. In 1989, Living Savior opened its current facility, a multi-purpose room and Living Savior Preschool educational classrooms.
In addition to weekly Sunday Services at 8:30 and 11:00, with Sunday School 9:45-10:45, Living Savior has a vibrant outreach program. It has been recognized by the Fairfax Station community for its nationally certified preschool and kindergarten program, its co-sponsorship of the area’s annual Crop Walk, its philanthropic Christmas tree sales, its robust youth servant event trips throughout the mid-Atlantic States, and its support of NOVACO, an organization which provides support, services and housing to homeless victims of domestic abuse.
If you’d like to be part of this active congregation serving God and serving others, please come join us. To find out more please call (703) 352-1421 or visit this website.
